Cambodia is a country steeped in an ancient history based around the Khmer Empire, once the largest empire in South East Asia. Angkor was the region of Cambodia that served as the seat of the empire during its heyday (approximately the 9th century to the 15th century A.D.). The temples of the Angkor area numbered over 1000, and today many of them still remain, but in wide range of scales and forms.

Yet, as extraordinary as it is, on this special four-day tour you'll soon see that there is so much more to Angkor than just Angkor Wat. CAMBODIA TOURS

The center piece of any visit to Cambodia is Angkor Wat; however, this alluring country has much more to offer. From the world heritage site of Angkor to the hidden gems of the rural areas, Exotissimo’s tours are designed to show you the best of Cambodia.

Siem Reap is the gateway to the Temples of Angkor, magnificent ruins built between the 9th to 14th centuries. More than 100 temples are located in the area and several days can be spent wandering amongst the monuments. Accompanied by an expert guide travelers will learn about the history of the temples, their religious significance, and the methods used to build them. Siem Reap is also home to the Tonle Sap Lake, a natural wonder full of floating villages and mangrove forests.

In the center of the country is Phnom Penh, the busy capital city. Situated at the confluence of three rivers, a boat trip a fabulous way to arrive in the city.  Travelers can reach Vietnam’s Mekong Delta to the southeast or travel to Siem Reap on a beautiful cruise along the Tonle River and Tonle Sap Lake. Phnom Penh is a mix of colonial buildings, Buddhist temples, and leafy boulevards. Although developing rapidly, the city still retains a rugged charm. Specialized cultural excursions, historic tours of the tragic Khmer Rouge monuments, and trips to nearby villages are all fabulous ways to learn more about the capital and the country.

Intrepid travelers should spend some time in rural Cambodia, a land filled with mountains and beaches, rivers and jungles. Traveling through the rural areas is a great way to not only experience the variety of natural landscapes, but also unveils the lifestyles and genuine warmth of the Cambodian people. Kampong Thom has a magnificent set of ancient ruins, Kratie is home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins, and smaller towns present a great chance to experience traditional life and stunning scenery. Trekking is a popular option in the areas of Rattanakiri and Mondulkiri in the north and Kampot and Takeo in the south.

Although not as pristine as the beaches of southern Thailand or Vietnam, Cambodia’s Sihanoukville and Kep are nice places to enjoy the sand, sun, and ocean. Nearby Ream National Park and the colonial-feel Kampot make great day trips in the area. For those with a longer holiday, a visit to the south is certainly worth the time.
