CAMBODIA TRAVEL
Cambodia is a country where culture, nature, and man-made wonders converge in to one magnificent destination. Traveling in Cambodia is an immensely rewarding experience.
Siem Reap, home to the magnificent Temples of Angkor, is the focal point of most Cambodia travel. From the 9th and 14th centuries, the powerful Angkorian Empire stretched across the country and in to what is now Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. During that time, hundreds of temples were constructed and today these monuments are all that remain of this once-mighty empire.
The main temple complex, just 7 kilometers from central Siem Reap, is where one can find Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Phrom. On the outskirts of the city lie the striking Banteay Srei and Banteay Kdei, as well as the Rolous Group, the oldest remaining temples in the area. For travelers with more time, the jungle-covered Beng Melea, located an hour from Siem Reap, is a worthwhile excursion.
After exploring the ancient capital, most visitors continue to the modern capital, Phnom Penh. Here one finds an intriguing blend of ancient wonders, French-colonial era buildings, and modern structures. Explore the National Museum and Royal Palace to learn more about the country’s history. Visit Buddhist temples such as Wat Phnom and Wat Ounalom where orange-clad monks pray alongside glittering Buddha statues. Travel to the Killing Fields and tour Tuol Sleng Prison for a sobering glimpse in to the tragic Khmer Rouge era of the 1970s. Phnom Penh is also a great place to learn more about the arts and culture scene with a visit to one of the city’s art galleries, attending a performance of shadow puppetry or dance, or taking an architectural tour.
With most visitors focusing their Cambodia travels on Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, the rural areas are often overlooked. However there are many wonderful destinations where friendly locals, beautiful nature, and traditional cultures can be further explored and any visitor who has time to visit these areas will be greatly rewarded. Small towns such as Kampong Thom and Kampong Cham are home to more ancient temples from the Angkorian era but yet do not receive the crowds found in Siem Reap. Kratie, in the north, is a laid-back town on the Mekong River where the endangered Irrawaddy Dolphins can be spotted while to the far northwest, the Rattanakiri and Mondulkiri areas are the mountainous homes of Cambodia’s ethnic hilltribes. Along the southern coast, just three hours from Phnom Penh, are the beaches of Sihanoukville and Ream National Park. Nearby one can visit the tranquil, colonial-era town of Kampot and the small, yet beautiful beachside town of Kep.
No Cambodia travel experience would be complete without a visit to the Tonle Sap Lake. The largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, the Tonle Sap is the lifeblood of the Cambodians who rely on it for food, water, and transportation. Popular day trips can be taken from Siem Reap to floating villages such as Kampong Phluck or, for a truly unique journey, overnight trips can be arranged between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.
Uncover the magic of Cambodia with a tailor-made tour through the country. Exotissimo’s team of travel professionals can create a program designed especially for you.
